Love and the Soul: Apuleius’ Cupid and Psyche in European Culture, 1600-1960: This project studies the reception of the love-story of Cupid and Psyche, first known as an inserted tale in the Latin novel Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass by the second-century AD writer Apuleius, in European literature, art and opera from 1600 to the present day.
Cupid and Psyche had a broad influence in European culture and was itself appropriated and adapted to suit particular cultural contexts. The project consists of the following: Organisation of an interdisciplinary conference in Leeds in July 2016 on Cupid and Psyche's reception, to gather international scholars to study the text and its reception in detail.
A conference website will enable scholarly interaction before, during and after the actual event. Following the conference, there will be two major outputs: one co-edited conference volume of selected papers which study specific elements of Cupid and Psyche's reception in detail, and one co-authored book by Regine May and Stephen Harrison to provide the context and pull the information together in chronological order.
