The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies conducts world-leading research into human languages, cultures, and societies past and present. Our work is driven by the understanding of language as a route to historical, sociological, psychological, political, literary and cultural insights, and the desire to nuance the key debates of our times with linguistically and contextually well-informed contributions.
Our wide-ranging expertise covers Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Classics, East Asian Studies (Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai), Film Studies, French, German, Intercultural Studies and Comparative Literature, Italian, Linguistics and Phonetics, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, and Translation and Interpreting Studies.
The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies conducts individual as well as collaborative, and interdisciplinary research through Research Centres and Research Projects, and supervises postgraduate researchers working on a wide range of related topics.
