We promote the study of Dante from a variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives.

Our research

The Leeds Centre for Dante Studies promotes the study of Dante from a variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives, both within the University of Leeds and beyond. It does so through its dynamic programme of research activity and collaboration; supporting and enriching undergraduate and postgraduate study; and bringing Dante to a wider public through its open lectures and podcasts.

Our primary research focus is the major AHRC-funded project, Dante and Late Medieval Florence: Theology in Poetry, Practice and Society, which brings together a team of seven researchers at Leeds and Warwick to examine the connections between religious thought and practice in Florence in the period 1280-1300, and Dante's poetry.

The Centre is based in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds. Following the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the The Guardian ranked Italian at Leeds second in its league table of UK Italian Departments with all of its research rated as being internationally recognised in terms of its originality, significance and rigour, and 75% of its work being classed as 'internationally excellent' or 'world-leading'.

We also work closely with the Devers Program in Dante Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
