All our students of Portuguese have the opportunity to spend up to a year abroad studying or working in Portugal or Brazil. During this time, you'll make substantial linguistic progress, acquiring a deeper knowledge and appreciation of your host country. This part of your degree will also allow you to develop personally and academically, and prepare you for your final year of study on your return.
Our students find the experience of studying or working in a Portuguese-speaking country extremely rewarding and fulfilling.
How we support you
We provide you with support and advice before and during your residence abroad year.
Before, you will have regular meetings with Residence Abroad tutors in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies and in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, as well as access to online information. You’ll also be able to network with returning students for first-hand advice about living and studying overseas.
During your time abroad, you'll have support at your host institution, and your Residence Abroad tutors will be in regular touch with you, too. You will also continue to have an Academic Personal Tutor at Leeds.
On your return, we'll ask you to share your experiences and make the most of your new and improved skills and experience to benefit students preparing to do what you have just done!
We have many partner universities in Portugal and Brazil where you can choose to study, including:
Mackenzie Presbyterian University, São Paulo
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro
Universidade Estadual de Campinas
