Enhanced Subtitling Practice

This research-led, practice-focused course challenges conventional subtitling by reimagining subtitles as an integrated part of audiovisual design rather than a purely technical add-on. Designed for subtitlers, audiovisual translators, content creators, and media professionals who recognise subtitling as a deeply creative activity, it responds to growing evidence that traditional methods often limit audience understanding and engagement and can increasingly be replicated by AI. Through case studies, hands-on exercises, and accessible video tutorials, you will learn core audiovisual design principles and explore innovative subtitling strategies that convey meaning, tone, and visual cues more effectively by working with, rather than against, the image and sound. Language-agnostic and fully online, the course equips experienced practitioners to develop high-quality, human-driven subtitling skills that add value beyond automation and give you a clear edge in an AI-saturated industry.

Who is the course for?

  • Subtitlers and audiovisual translators seeking to enhance their portfolios with new subtitling practice

  • Students and professionals looking for a practical entry into advanced media localisation or to develop new subtitling skills that give them an edge in an AI-saturated industry.

  • Content owners and producers seeking high-quality subtitling that will more effectively make their product accessible to foreign audiences.

  • Those who understand that subtitling is a profoundly creative activity.

What previous knowledge do you need?

This course is primarily designed for subtitling professionals and students who want to expand their practice and offer new services to their clients. To get the most out of it, you should have hands-on subtitling experience, be comfortable with professional subtitling guidelines and at least one subtitling tool.

The course covers both theoretical principles and practical techniques using free software - no prior academic knowledge in translation or subtitling studies is necessary, and no preparatory reading is required before you begin. If you don’t have any subtitling practice, you will still be able to complete the course, but you should learn subtitling timing rules and how to fully use a subtitling tool before you offer Enhanced Subtitling services.

This course is also language-agnostic, meaning it is relevant regardless of the language pair you work with.

How is the course organised?

The course is broken into four units of content and one unit to assess your learning, making a total of 8h to 10h of learning. Each unit is structured into small sections with video tutorials and practical exercises that can be completed step by step so that you can fit this training around your schedule.

We recommend completing one unit per week, so you have time to reflect and apply what you learn. That said, the course is fully self-paced, so you can move faster or slower depending on your other commitments.

All learning is 100% online and asynchronous. There are no live classes with your tutor, and you can work through the materials whenever it suits you. You will have the opportunity to meet with your tutor on scheduled days to ask questions and discuss specific issues you wish to develop, but you can also progress with the courses independently.
