This project is designed to determine the variety and specificity of the ways in which Italian cinema has constructed a relationship with the past over the course of its own history. It will use the study of the Italian case to challenge canonical accounts of film and history and to advance understanding of how the past is mediated in a key cultural form.
The crucial conceptual shift exemplified in this project is from a normative/prescriptive idea of what historical filmmaking should be to an analytic concern instead with the range and specificity of how Italian cinema has constructed a relationship with the past. Through the analysis of the Italian case we will develop a methodology to be applied in other national and transnational contexts.
