The Correspondance générale de Benjamin Constant is part of a critical edition of the complete works of the Franco-Swiss writer and politician (1767-1830). The Œuvres complètes de Benjamin Constant will run to some 50 volumes and is published by De Gruyter. The correspondence will include all known letters by and to Constant, some 8,000 in total. Volume 15 (1827) was published in 2024, bringing the total number of letters published so far to 5228. The remaining letters include a great many sent to Constant after the July Revolution of 1830, providing extensive insights into the concerns of the French public and of the scramble for places in the aftermath of a regime change which brought him back to a position of influence. The aim of the project is to complete publication of the remaining volumes by the bicentenary of Constant’s death in 2030.
