Germany has enormous political and economic influence within the European Union and is the fourth largest economy in the world. German is widely spoken in Central and Eastern Europe and fluency in German combined with a detailed knowledge of German culture will make you extremely attractive to employers.
You can choose from our BA German degree or study German with another language or subject on one of our Modern Languages degrees.
Learning with us
Our four-year German degree is designed to meet the needs of beginners as well as more advanced learners, meaning you can study German at Leeds with or without having studied the language before.
German at Leeds is an exciting place for your undergraduate degree. Our close-knit community and excellent pastoral care creates a friendly and lively atmosphere for all of our students.
Our teaching staff are involved in innovative research focused on contemporary (20th and 21st century) cultural studies, with interests in literature, translation, history, cinema and theatre. This means that you'll have a wide range of optional modules to choose from which will support you to become an outstanding graduate, primed for the intellectual, cultural and professional challenges ahead.
The University's Language Zone has a range of resources, including books, magazines, audio and video resources, in over 50 languages and provides additional opportunities to practice your language skills through workshops, language exchanges and language groups.
Enrichment opportunities
You'll be encouraged to get involved with a range of activities, from working on the student journal Politik to joining the student-run German Society. Kaffee und Kuchen is a great way to meet other students, including visiting German students. You might even play in the Sauerkraut cup (a national football competition).
