Year 1

Compulsory modules

  • Worlds of Literature (20 credits) – Making use of examples drawn from the wide range of cultures taught in LCS, this module will challenge you to think critically about your own perceptions of literary cultures, raise your awareness of the intellectual, cultural and ethical questions in the study of literature, and introduce you to some of the concepts and approaches that will help you to negotiate the reciprocities and complexities of the interactions between literary traditions

  • What is Russia? An Introduction to Russian Studies (20 credits)

Optional modules

Students with an A Level in Russian, or equivalent knowledge of the language, will be required to study the following modules:

  • Core Russian Language 1 (20 credits)

Students with no prior knowledge of Russian will be required to study the following modules:

  • Beginning Russian 1 (20 credits)

  • Beginning Russian 2 (20 credits)

Year 2

Compulsory modules

  • Russian Year Abroad (120 credits)

Year 3

Compulsory module

  • Core Russian 2 (20 credits)

Optional modules

Students will be required to study a minimum of 20 credits from the following optional modules:

  • Applied Russian Language 2 (20 credits)    

  • The Sounds of Russian (20 credits)

  • The Structures of Russian (20 credits)

  • Gender and Sexuality in Russia (20 credits)

  • The Spaces of Russian Literature (20 credits)

Modules studied in Year 3 may also be an option in Year 4 and do not need to be repeated.

Year 4

Compulsory modules

Students must study the following compulsory module:

  • Core Russian Language 3 (20 credits)

Optional modules

  • Final Year Project: Dissertation (40 credits)

  • Final Year Project: Extended Translation (40 credits)

  • Final Year Project: Digital Documentary (Podcast) (40 credits)

Students may study up to 40 credits from the following optional modules:

  • Material Cultures and Cultures of Consumption (20 credits)

  • Adventures of the Imagination: Crime and the Fantastic Across Continents (20 credits)

  • Decolonial Approaches (20 credits)

  • Social Movements across Cultures (20 credits)

  • Fyodor Dostoevsky: Artist and Prophet (20 credits)

  • Russian Advanced Translation (20 credits)

  • The Sounds of Russian (20 credits)

  • The Structures of Russian (20 credits)

  • The Spaces of Russian Literature (20 credits)

  • Gender and Sexuality in Russia (20 credits)
