Our research
We are a leading teaching and research centre for Japanese Studies with over fifty years of history. Our work draws on a variety of methods and approaches from anthropology, history, literature, film and media, international relations and development studies.
Particular research strengths include Japan’s diplomacy, foreign policy and development assistance, especially to Africa; Japan-Korea relations in historical perspective; social marginalisation and discrimination in contemporary society; the symbolism and politics of blood donation in Japan and Korea; the cultural politics of interwar Japanese modernity; gender and urban spectacle; technology, the body and the senses; translation and language pedagogy.
