Our research recognises the contemporary hyper-mobile condition where people, communication and resources flow constantly but unevenly across borders, and we use the lenses of language, communication and culture to better understand this situation. Many current intercultural processes, including conflicts, also have deep roots. By examining historical interactions between groups or individuals we can observe patterns of continuity and change, and this can shed light on present-day cultural dynamics and interactions.
Research in Intercultural Studies is inherently interdisciplinary, using approaches and methodologies from Social Anthropology, Cultural Studies and Sociolinguistics, among other disciplines. As such, we draw on the knowledge and skills of researchers from across the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and beyond.
