Our research

Our research and publications in French and Francophone Studies cover the European medieval world and the global diversity of modernity, employing a distinctively broad range of disciplinary approaches across the arts, humanities and social sciences. We pursue individual and collaborative research in medieval, modern and contemporary literature, modern history, politics and thought, critical theory, memory studies, cinema and visual cultures, the study of colonial and postcolonial France, Algeria, Morocco and the French Caribbean, Francophone writing and culture, war and conflict, popular culture and language, linguistics and translation studies.

Colleagues in French have recently secured funding from the AHRC, the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, the Wellcome Trust, the French Ministry for War Veterans, Paris City Council, the Institutes for Advanced Study of Paris and Marseille, and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences. We regularly host international conferences and hold a research seminar series with invited speakers from across the UK and beyond. We actively welcome postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers to join our vibrant research community. Our staff pages provide further information on our fields of interest, funded research and collaborative projects.
