Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American research

Our research

We are an internationally-renowned unit with research expertise in a wide variety of disciplines in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. We work on an interdisciplinary basis through language and literature, history, social sciences, film and digital culture, popular music, theatre, and art. Our research is broadly organised around thematic issues of visual culture, gender and sexuality, 'race' and marginalisation, regional and national identity, politics and democracy, urban studies, digital humanities, environmental humanities and translation studies.

We have a long history of hosting postdoctoral researchers and overseas postgraduate researchers, and supervise PhD and MRes projects across a wide range of our areas of expertise, often in collaboration with colleagues in other units of LCS. Members of SPLAS also play important roles in the activities of several research organisations within LCS.
