Abuse in Religious Settings

Postgraduate students

PRHS Postgraduates Elle Thwaites and Laura Wallace have been instrumental in organising a project workshop for postgraduates and early career researchers.

This project is concerned with abuse in a range of different religious communities and traditions and seeks to understand commonalities and differences across them.

We are exploring the role that the cultures and structures of faith communities play in relation to abuse; how legal, policy and safeguarding approaches are best developed in relation to religious contexts; and similarities and differences in survivors’ experiences.

As part of the work package led by Johanna Stiebert (University of Leeds), there will be:

  • a series of workshops (by invitation only),
  • the creation of a research network to support postgraduates and early career researchers working on topics of religion, violence and trauma,
  • a publication (under contract with Routledge),
  • a series of podcast episodes (The Shiloh Podcast, with Rosie Dawson).

Publications and outputs

A two-volume publication with Routledge Focus in the series Rape Culture, Religion and the Bible is under contract.

The volumes have multiple contributors writing on six separate religious traditions. The editor is Johanna Stiebert.
