- Course: MA Music and Management
- Nationality: Taiwanese
What made you want to apply to your MA course and to Leeds?
I’m from Taiwan, and I received my Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance at National Taiwan University of Arts. At some point during my time in university, I realised that I couldn’t picture myself as a performer in the future.
I’ve had several chances to participate in several opera productions and also worked as a Venue Managing Coordinator in a performance hall, and I really enjoyed it. Therefore, I wanted to explore more deeply the management aspect of the classical music industry. I did my research and found that University of Leeds offered this MA in Music and Management, and felt it would be a good fit for me. Plus Leeds University Business School (LUBS) is world-renowned, and the programme offers both involvement with LUBS and School of Music, which is an extra bonus point when I was making my decision.
What aspects of the course did you enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed being able to take modules in LUBS, such as: Creative Industries Management and Marketing for Management. Learning about management when having no previous experience in business management was very challenging for me. However, with all the great resources I got from University of Leeds and the help from very experienced lecturers, I was able to go beyond my comfort zone.
What would you say about Leeds as a city?
Leeds has everything that a student could ever ask for. No matter what your background is, Leeds makes you feel welcomed. It offers great food, arts events, night life and shopping experience.
I originally thought Leeds was going to be a rather quiet city compared to bigger cities such as London or Manchester, but now that I’ve seen and experienced Leeds I know it to be a vibrant city. It’s a city that I will miss very much after my studies.
What would you say about the learning facilities in your School and at the University in general?
University of Leeds has several libraries, and holds a large collections of books. You can always find what you need when you need it. Also, the libraries offer talks and guidance on how to structure and write your essays and reports, which are very helpful. They also offer online resources, which are also very helpful but also convenient.
What other activities are available for students to take part in outside of their studies, and which ones have you tried out yourself?
Leeds Student Union offers many societies for you to join so there is definitely something for everyone. In addition, there are also many student events and productions on campus. There are always great options if you’re looking to join something that will allow you to accumulate more experience while making friends.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?
The University of Leeds offers high-quality education. This Music and Management joint programme by School of Music and LUBS will definitely give you great knowledge and experience for working in the industry.
What do you plan to do now you’ve finished your course, and how do you think the skills and knowledge you’ve developed at Leeds will help with these plans?
I’m now working in a PR company specialising in classical music and performing arts. The things I learnt at the University of Leeds fully prepared me for working in the industry. Finding this job was made easier as I am now a degree holder from this world-leading university.
