Visiting Research Fellows and Visiting Scholars
The School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies welcomes applications for Visiting Research Fellows and Visiting Scholars. The two different routes are introduced below.
The deadline for both routes is 1 May each year for a start date of 1 September.

Visiting Research Fellows: open call
Visiting Research Fellowships serve two interlinked purposes:
• to support Fellows in their research with intuitional afflation and library access; and
• to actively contribute to the research culture of the school.
The term of a Visiting Research Fellowship is up to three years.
All Visiting Research Fellows will have:
• An active connection with a member of staff or Postgraduate Researcher from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies. The nature of this connection will be fully articulated in the application process.
• A defined and time-limited research project.
During their Fellowship, Visiting Research Fellows will:
• Have a University of Leeds email address, access to the libraries and use of a bookable hot desk in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies.
• Join the school research mailing list and be invited to all school Research Events
• Collaborate with their collaborator/s in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies to contribute one event per three-year Fellowship – this can be supported by access to a small pot of research funding.
How to apply
All applicants must:
• Make contact with a member of staff in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and explore a collaboration. Part of this discussion will include working out what facilities you need to be able to access so we can establish if this is possible.
• Explore our research centres and research clusters and consider how your research connects.
• Submit a two-page proposal, CV and letter of collaboration from a member of staff from our school before the deadline.
Terms and conditions
• All renewals of Visiting Research Fellowships will need to go through a full application process every three years.
• There are no Bench Fees for Visiting Fellowships in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies.
• We can offer no travel expenses, stipendiary support or funding support for visas.

Visiting Scholars: mentoring route
We welcome applications for Visiting Scholars interested in having an active mentoring relationship with a member of staff from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies.
A Visiting Scholar on the mentoring route is for one year.
All Visiting Scholars will have:
• A member of staff from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies as mentor.
• A defined and time-limited research project.
During their Fellowship, Visiting Scholars will:
• Have a University of Leeds email address, access to the libraries and use of a bookable hot desk in the Fine Art Building.
• Join the school research mailing list and be invited to all school Research Events
• Have six one-hour mentoring meetings per academic year with their mentor.
• Opportunity to audit one MA module.
How to apply
All applicants must:
• Make contact with a member of staff from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and explore a mentorship. As part of this you will develop a mentoring contract that will define your project’s focus and the support we can offer.
• Explore our research centres and research clusters and consider how your research connects.
• Submit a two-page proposal, CV and letter of collaboration from a member of staff from our school before the deadline.
Terms and conditions
• Bench fees apply to this route: £10,500 for one year from 1 September 2024.
The deadline for Visiting Scholar applications for the following academic year is 1 May.
