The uses of the past: History and social memory in Northern Ireland 1980-20

Value

£98,000

Description

This project will explore the ways in which the historical past has been remembered in Northern Ireland through an analysis of public forms of social memory from 1980-2020. It will focus on two specific modes of ‘the art of memory’: murals and memorials. The cross-disciplinary research, combining history and cultural/visual studies, will produce the first monograph devoted to this topic in the conflict and post-conflict periods. Given the continuing significance of the conflict in Northern Ireland, this work will be of interest to historians, cultural analysts, students of conflict and conflict-resolution, and a general readership.
