Description
This project will make the collection of pioneering Jewish historian Cecil Roth (1899-1970) accessible locally and internationally. It will make a remarkable but currently hidden collection of Hebraica and Judaica meaningful to as wide an audience as possible.
Online catalogues and subject indexes will be produced for materials that have had inadequate representation in scholarly circles. These include thirteenth- to the twentieth-century Hebrew manuscripts, pre-1851 printed Hebraica and Judaica, rare eighteenth- and nineteenth-century pamphlets in Hebrew, Italian and other languages, and twentieth-century archival material related to Roth’s collecting and research networks. The project will digitize and make freely available a significant portion of the unique manuscript material. The project will support an academic seminar series, resulting in at least one peer-reviewed published output and a public exhibition. A series of outreach activities will attract scholarly and public audiences raising the profile of Cecil Roth’s work and involvement in Jewish lifesociety.
