Visiting PGR Researcher Information

Parkinson Building tower and campus buildings

International applicants who are currently undertaking a PhD at another institution are able to apply to study at the University of Leeds for a duration of between 1 and 12 months. If offered a place of study, they continue to work on their PhD project under the supervision of academics from the University of Leeds. Visiting researchers have access to any University of Leeds facilities that are offered to standard University of Leeds Postgraduate researchers. They do not receive any formal qualification or assessment from the University of Leeds.

Apply for a place of study using the University of Leeds’s online application system.

  •  Indicate that you are applying for a research stay on the application form by selecting ‘Student Visitor History’ from the dropdown menu next to ‘Planned course of study’.
  • Indicate your proposed supervisor(s) on the form.

Documents required for an application:

  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and transcript
  • Master’s degree certificate and transcript
  • A copy of your research proposal / An account of your proposed research project, making clear the work to be undertaken at Leeds
  • An indication of the resources at Leeds which you wish to use (e.g. library facilities and supervision by a member of academic staff) and the length of your proposed visit. These details will help us set an appropriate fee for your visit.
  • Two academic references. Please contact your referees and ask them to email them directly to AHCPGRAdmissions@leeds.ac.uk. References should be sent as an email attachment from an institutional or professional email account. Please do not send from a personal email account. Access further information about references, including a template that can be used.
  • Evidence of your current registration on a PhD programme, such as a letter from your home University confirming that you are a current registered student, including the start and end dates of your course of study
  • A copy of your CV, including details of your current research degree status
  • Evidence of English Language proficiency if English is not your first language. View details of the requirements and the evidence that we are able to accept.

Once an application has been submitted:

  • We may ask for additional supporting documents. We will get in contact with you if this is the case.
  • We will make a fees assessment based on the nature of your visit and inform you the fees for your stay. View an overview of the fee schedule for the coming year.

There are no fixed deadlines for applications for a research student visitor application, but we recommend you apply at least 3 months before you intend to visit.
