Working in partnership
Within the School of History, our staff and students value the importance of collaboration. By working with partners outside the university, we offer students new opportunities to develop their skills and we ensure our research can speak to the concerns and priorities of our collaborators beyond the academy. Everything we do is improved by genuine collaboration.
Our staff and students work with a huge range of partners, including artists, charities, community groups, museums, archives, libraries and governments. We maintain partnerships at regional, national, and international levels.
The Royal Armouries
The University of Leeds' Institute for Medieval Studies has worked closely with the Royal Armouries Museum ever since the museum’s establishment in Leeds in 1996. The partnership between the School of History and the Royal Armouries offers our students an exceptional point of access into the martial material culture of medieval Eurasia and beyond through workshops and hands-on experience with the collections. The partnership also facilitates research activity at both institutions and provides the foundation for collaborative work.

West Yorkshire Archive Service
Our innovative partnership with West Yorkshire Archive Service (WYAS) provides opportunities for our students to collaborate with archivists in the heritage sector. Working together is embedded into some of our option modules: we offer placements for Masters students, whilst undergraduates get to experience archival research and learn from archivists.
The West Yorkshire Archive Service benefit from working with our students on projects and material that highlight the rich and varied records - totalling nearly 1,000,000 - held in their collections. The best of the co-produced work from our students is often made publicly available, driving public engagement with WYAS’ collections and developing valued skills in our students.
