Documenting group music performances using 360-degree audio-visual capture

Project leader

Dr Ewan Stefani, School of Music

Project description

This project will explore the use of 360-degree video and audio capture to capture and document group rehearsals or performances of electronic music.

The technology should enable the viewer to step into and move around the musicians to see and hear what individual performers are contributing to the ensemble.

Such an immersive documentation of up to 16 performers could enable a deeper understanding of how the members of the ensemble interact and follow instructions than is possible with conventional recording methods.

It is hoped that such documentation could then become a valuable resource for teaching students about ensemble performance practice via reflective analysis of the footage.
