Our research

At PCI we research theatre, performance, media, arts policy and the cultural industries. Our research is characterised by being socially engaged and civic-minded – deeply rooted in and connected to the arts and culture, and the roles these play in society.

Research in PCI makes a difference in the world, since we value different forms of knowledge, diverse methodologies, and have a commitment to meaningful, equitable partnership with interested parties. We have strengths in interdisciplinary, creative, impactful research that is rigorous and that is demonstrably applied to the academic, cultural, social and policy-making contexts. We have a suite of thriving research groups that support colleagues year-round and changing research strands that enrich our activities.

Our research expertise mutually shapes our curriculum, while students, staff, PGRS and postdocs collaborate collectively in shaping our research culture. Researchers at all career stages engage in a congenial, mutually supportive culture, including active research groups, a (co-)mentoring scheme, research quality workshops and peer support. This enables us to produce quality research that attracts local, national and international partners and resources, who value our impact-oriented, creative and collaborative vision.

Through the value and quality of our research, the School’s academics have earned opportunities to lead (and collaborate in) large-scale challenge-based research projects and are well-equipped to articulate their impact to the rapidly evolving world beyond the academy.

We strive to foster a reputation for field leadership in performance and cultural industries research and scholarship, including practice research. We aim to do this in an estate that is carbon neutral and where our practices will be influential in demonstrating sustainable models of performance-making and research, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Locally, organisations and individuals from across the region’s cultural and creative communities see us as a valued partner and can trust us to support and collaborate with them, practicing an ethics of engagement.

Nationally and internationally, we are seen as an innovative space for studies and research that constantly challenges established structures of thinking and doing. To join our events, and stay in touch to learn more about research in PCI by signing up for our mailing list.
