Centre for Hidden Histories

Description

The Centre for Hidden Histories was one of five World War One Engagement Centres which aimed to engage with and support communities in the commemoration of the centenary of the First World War. The Centre worked with previously marginalised communities that reflect the diversity of modern Britain and special effort is made to reach out to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities, having developed successful links with Sikh and South Asian Muslim communities and with African and African diaspora communities.

The Centre for Hidden Histories engaged with community groups through a programme of outreach and support activities. The ‘hidden’ themes were the impact of the war on countries around the British Empire; the treatment of enemy aliens in the UK and Germany and the different cultural responses to war and its memory.
