Cultural issues in Dhofar, Salalah

Ali al-Mahri organised and ran a 10-day cultural tourism course in Salalah between 04 and 14 January.

Ali al-Mahri was assisted by Janet Watson, who provided course materials on Mehri as an indigenous language of the region.

The course was attended by eight participants, each of whom came from a different country, namely: Italy, Canada, United States, UK, Belgium, Oman, Japan and Saudi Arabia.

The course covered cultural descriptions, an introduction to the languages of the region, and trips to Mughsayl, Jabal Samhan, Ayn Razat, Xawr Rori, Job’s tomb, to a camel kneeling place, and an evening in a wadi near Ittin, where a huge pot of rice and camel meat was prepared. Some of the photos can be seen here.

We plan to run more winter courses on this topic, and are currently preparing a brochure to advertise the course. The Mehri version of this news item can be read here
