SPLAS Film Club Screening of Un cel de plom Features Q&A with Director Moderated by Students

The film director, Miquel Romans, joined online for a Q&A led by the students of the Catalan Languages and Culture III module
On Wednesday 19 February, the SPLAS Film Club hosted an open screening of Un cel de plom (‘Ashes in the Sky’), a Catalan historical drama portraying the life of resistance fighter Neus Català (1915-2019).
Before the screening, the film director, Miquel Romans, joined the audience online for a question-and-answer session. The discussion was conducted by students from the Catalan Languages and Culture III module, who prepared the questions and provided simultaneous interpreting. This exchange gave participants the opportunity to learn more about the process of adapting a historical narrative to the screen. The multilingual conversations in the film were also commented, and the director explained how he approached language depiction.
Un cel de plom is based on Carme Martí’s novel of the same name, which reconstructs the life of Neus Català, a member of the French Resistance who survived deportation to Ravensbrück concentration camp. In preparation for the event, students of the Catalan Language and Culture modules had studied both Català’s biography and the Catalan concentration camp genre in class.
The screening was in Catalan with English subtitles, and was organised with the support of the Institut Ramon Llull.
