Discovering Marià Manent, Translator of English Poetry into Catalan, with Arnau Vives Piñas
The workshop dedicated to Marià Manent, one of the key literary figures of twentieth-century Catalan culture, formed part of the academic and cultural programme supported by the Institut Ramon Llull.
On 5 December 2025, students of Catalan took part in a session titled ‘Marià Manent, traductor al català de poesia anglesa’ (‘Marià Manent, Catalan translator of English Poetry’), led by professor from the Universitat de Barcelona Arnau Vives-Piñas, who is one of the experts on Manent’s life and work. The activity began with a brief biographical and bibliographical introduction to Manent, delivered entirely in Catalan, offering participants an overview of his cultural relevance and his trajectory, a key example of how the political circumstances deeply affected Catalan literature.
The session then continued with a short Catalan-to-English translation workshop, allowing students to engage directly with Manent’s texts and reflect on some challenges of literary translation.
This activity was organised within the support of the Institut Ramon Llull.
