The University of Leeds’ International Medieval Congress (IMC) returns in July 2025, bringing together medievalists from across the globe for four days of academic discussion, public events, and demonstrations of medieval life.

As the world’s largest forum for medieval studies and a catalyst for new research collaborations and ideas, the IMC attracts participants from over 60 countries and features more than 2,400 papers alongside concerts, performances, excursions, and book and craft fairs.

This year’s congress will run from Monday 7 July to Thursday 10 July and once again offer both in-person and virtual participation. The conference’s theme is ‘Worlds of Learning’ and will explore knowledge production, transmission, and exchange in the medieval world.

Dr Axel E. W. Müller, Director of the International Medieval Congress, said:

“We are delighted to offer a wide array of activities for academics and the public alike. ‘Worlds of Learning’ promises to draw the international community together at Leeds, a cornerstone of medieval studies, to share exciting new academic research and explore fresh perspectives.”

The first edition of the IMC 2025 programme is now available online, detailing a packed schedule of sessions and events on offer. Of particular interest to new researchers is the new Digital Medieval Studies Institute: a full-day workshop exploring digital methodologies in medieval studies. This initiative is a collaboration between the Institute for Medieval Studies, University of Leeds Libraries, and the Digital Medievalist journal, and will take place on Friday 11 July.

Organised by the University’s Institute for Medieval Studies, the IMC welcomes not only academics but also members of the public, who can enjoy a huge range of activities, from medieval music and combat displays to falconry, craft activities, and public keynote lectures as part of the popular Making Leeds Medieval festival.

Paid events will go on sale at 10am on 11 February. Public tickets can be purchased via the registration site by selecting ‘Public events, excursions and workshops only - NO REGISTRATION.’

The IMC, which began in 1994, has played a key role in establishing the University of Leeds as a world-leading centre for medieval studies, building on a scholarly tradition that includes figures such as Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien, who specialised in Old Icelandic language and literature.

The January edition of the IMC Newsletter provides further details on IMC 2025, including keynote lectures and a preview of the IMC 2026 call for papers.

In line with the University of Leeds’ emphasis on accessibility, the IMC is fully hybrid with over 600 session recordings available to registered delegates.
