Practioner Development and Scholarship short course 2024-25

Course overview

Course overview

This course will allow you to develop and demonstrate an understanding of the roles of professional development and scholarship in teaching and demonstrate an ability to practically apply these in professional methods.

You’ll gain an in-depth critical understanding of the many factors that influence professional development of the self and the field, and an awareness of the approaches to professional development that enhance practitioner agency through a focus on expertise, knowledge, and practices.

The course also focuses on scholarship, examining the concept of scholarship and related concepts, such as practitioner research. You’ll explore the purposes of scholarship, ways of conducting scholarship and of contributing to the field, analysing the relationship between scholarship and student education, how scholarship informs and is informed by teaching materials, pedagogy, syllabus, and assessment.

This short course is a module taken from the MA in Teaching English for Academic Purposes
You’ll study this credit-bearing module as an individual course to widen your knowledge in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and develop your skills within the field. You’ll study online and part-time, on a course that’s designed to fit around your commitments. You’ll study with experts in the field at the University of Leeds Language Centre, who are directly involved in the practice and development of teaching English for Academic Purposes.

We have a range of Masters-level short courses available to help you develop as a practitioner of EAP, explore new approaches and prepare to take the next step in your career. You’ll gain postgraduate credits when you complete each course, and you can use these credits towards a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip), or a Masters (MA).
