Profile
I joined the University of Leeds in 2014. Before that, I taught at Durham and Roehampton Universities. I have an MA and PhD in philosophy from King’s College London. Not unusually for someone with interests in philosophy of science, my first degree was in Chemistry at Imperial College London.

Research interests
My main research interests lie in philosophy of art, both mainstream aesthetics and interdisciplinary projects.
I work on philosophy of music and dance. Interdisciplinary interests in those areas encompass work on early 20th-century music (Arnold Schoenberg, Les Six) and British ballet (Frederick Ashton, Robert Helpmann and Ninette de Valois). Further interdisciplinary efforts devoted to painting have focused on Edvard Munch and Francisco de Goya. In all these projects, I am very keen to explore the interplay between theoretical work, on the one hand, and pedagogy and dissemination, on the other.
In mainstream aesthetics research, I pursue research on values in art, including the intrinsic value of our aesthetic experience, and the interaction between aesthetic value and other values, such as ethical and cognitive. Other research also extends into the difficult emotions elicited by art, and how to maximize our art appreciative practices.

Student education
I teach a range of modules in a variety of areas, including in aesthetics, philosophy of science (general philosophy of science and philosophy of physics), history of philosophy (Locke, Leibniz, Berkeley, Hume and Kant), epistemology, philosophy of social science and philosophy of religion.
