Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director Tom Wright visits PCI

Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director Tom Wright visited the School of Performance and Cultural Industries on 20 November, engaging in an in-depth session with theatre directing students

Wright began the afternoon with a discussion with Professor Jonathan Pitches (Head of School), Steve Ansell (Artistic Director, stage@leeds) and Professor George Rodosthenous, exploring shared priorities and opportunities for future collaboration.

He then joined students from the BA Theatre and Performance programmes for an open and wide-ranging conversation about his practice. Wright discussed his vision for Leeds Playhouse, his directorial and writing methods, and his approach to developing new work. He also offered a preview of the strategic thinking behind the theatre’s forthcoming season, giving students valuable insight into the artistic leadership of a major regional venue.

The session was highly interactive, with students asking about potential partnerships with the Playhouse, early career pathways, and practical steps for emerging directors.

Professor Pitches said: “It was fantastic to welcome Tom to the School and to hear his inspiring advice for students. As leading institutions for live theatre and performance in the city, we have so many shared priorities to work on together. I’m looking forward to starting that collaborative work with Tom and the rest of Playhouse team in earnest."

The visit aims to strengthen the existing ties between the University of Leeds and Leeds Playhouse, highlighting a shared commitment to civic engagement, nurturing new talent and shaping the future of theatre in the city and beyond.
