Students produce inspirational performance for West Yorkshire Schools
Masters students have joined together to produce a performance-workshop aimed at inspiring 15-to-17-year-olds to continue with their studies
Masters students and founders of Bloomin' Buds Theatre Company, Katie Mahon and Molly Rumford, have joined together with students from MA Performance Design and MA Writing for Performance and Publication, supported by tutor Dr Adam Strickson, to produce Get In!’, a performance-workshop aimed at inspiring 15-to-17 year olds to continue with their studies.
The lively performance will make its debut at the University’s Open Day on Saturday 15 June before making its way across Leeds to perform in Schools and Colleges in the city, Bradford and Kirklees.
Adam Strickson said: “We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds to our undergraduate courses. The project has been a wonderful chance for MA students across disciplines to collaborate.”
Get In!, based on the life stories of the cast, aims to encourage those from diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to apply to university, especially to study an undergraduate degree in Theatre and Performance in the School of Performance and Cultural Industries.
It’s important that the School is taking the initiative to reach out to disadvantaged young people and we’re excited we’ve been asked to do it.
The team also includes co-ordinator, Natasha Berg; Leeds lawyer, radio presenter and actor Anil Bharath and MA students from Performance Design and Writing, Xiao Xiao and Kerry Wright.
This pilot project has been funded by the University’s Footsteps Fund and is being organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts Humanities and Cultures Educational Engagement team, at the University of Leeds.
