Afnan Alasmari

Profile

I am a lecturer in Linguistics at King Khalid University, where I have gained valuable educational and research experience. I began my academic journey at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language. Building on this foundation, I pursued a Master’s degree in Linguistics at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. My thesis, entitled “A multimodal analysis of the representation of Saudi women in selected caricature images from Cartoon Movement: A global platform for editorial cartoons”, examined the portrayal of Saudi women in global media.

Research interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of language, media, and culture, with a particular focus on how representation, space, and subjectivity are constructed in film and other visual texts. I am especially interested in cross-disciplinary approaches that draw on film studies, discourse analysis, and cultural studies to explore the ways media both reflect and shape social practices, values, and identities. Through this work, I aim to contribute to broader conversations about gender, society, and media, and to highlight how cultural production can generate new perspectives on the relationship between representation and social change.
