Afnan Alasmari

Profile

I currently work with King Khalid University as a Linguistics lecturer, where I have acquired useful educational and research experience. I began my academic journey at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia, where I acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in English language. Expanding upon my initial progress, I pursued a Master's in Linguistics at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. My thesis was entitled “A multimodal analysis of the representation of Saudi women in selected caricature images from Cartoon Movement: A global platform for editorial cartoons”.

Research interests

My research aspirations center around the dynamic interplay between language and society within the realms of critical discourse analysis, multimodality, social semiotics, film studies, and language and media. I aspire to push theoretical linguistics' boundaries out of a passionate desire to explore these domains. My objective is to simplify the complicated ways that language both shows and forms social structures, ideas, and power relationships. By studying these cross-disciplinary areas more, I hope to come up with new ideas that will improve the theoretical foundations of linguistics and shed light on the complicated connections between language, society, and media. My goal in doing this study is to add something useful to the academic conversation and help us better understand the complicated connections between language and all parts of human life.

My current research examines women’s agency and visual storytelling  in Saudi Arabia’s Emerging Cinema, particularly within the context of contemporary social reform under Saudi Vision 2030.
