Profile

Mahmoud Elmasry has a background in human rights and activism, with a professional focus on supporting and amplifying the voices of marginalised communities. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Ain Shams University in Cairo and a Postgraduate Diploma in Non-Governmental Organization Management from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University. In 2021, he completed a Master’s degree in International Relations at Goldsmiths, University of London. Mahmoud joined the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures at the University of Leeds in September 2022 to pursue his PhD studies.

Research interests

His research takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining the relationship between the state, military patriarchy, and gendered subjects in authoritarian contexts. His work explores how militarisation and policing shape both physical and digital spaces, and how media infrastructures are mobilised to sustain misinformation, disinformation, and manipulation as instruments of social and political control.
