Volume 61.2 of Northern History out now
This issue has a focus on the north west.
Articles discuss eighteenth-century elections in Lancaster, cheesemaking in early modern Cheshire, horseracing in Kendal, and the cultivation of hemp in the region.
Other articles in the issue cover the Battle of Neville's Cross, transnational connections between South Yorkshire and Victoria, and the role of local political culture in East Riding's ‘War Ag’ during the Second World War. There is also a short article that uses port books to examine Cullercoats' role in the coal trade.
This issue contains a range of book reviews, including two with a focus on Leeds: Graham Rawson reviews Knowing One’s Place: Community and Class in the Industrial Suburbs of Leeds during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries by Robin Pearson (The Thoresby Society, 2021) and Tim Barringer reviews An Exhibition History of Victorian Leeds by Rebecca Wade (Liverpool University Press, 2023).
