Diversity and the publishing of history: a workshop

A free workshop examining publishing of History in the UK including the diversity of authors and topics.

A free workshop examining publishing of History in the UK including the diversity of authors and topics.

How diverse is the publishing of history in the UK? Are publishers publishing work from a wide variety of authors – in terms of gender, race, ability? Are they publishing on subjects which reflect the diversity of work going on within history today, and which reflect the diverse population of Britain historically? What can be done to improve the representation of minority background authors within publishing?

This workshop will consider the ways in which publishers of history – whether books, journal articles or other types of writing – might improve the diversity of what they publish, and seek to work with, and for, a more diverse range of authors. It will address the under-representation of women and other gender minorities, people of colour, and Disabled scholars within the publishing of history, and how this might change. The workshop will feature a panel discussion with Cathryn Steele (Assistant Commissioning Editor for History, Oxford University Press), Jonathan Saha (Editorial Collective member of History Workshop Journal and member of the Royal Historical Society Race, Ethnicity and Equality Working Group) and Alix Mortimer (Communications and Events Manager, History & Policy), and will feature time for discussion amongst participants as well as a formal Q&A with the panel. All are welcome, and refreshments will be provided.
