A talk exploring the poetry of the potato in Seamus Heaney to its role in War and Peace.
Professor Rebecca Earle, School of Comparative American Studies at the University of Warwick, has been researching the global history of potatoes and their journey from the South American Andes.
She is the author of Potato (Bloomsbury, 2019) and this February will discuss the role and position of the potato across poetry, philosophy and beyond.
What do we talk about when we talk about potatoes? Most of the time, potatoes are a byword for ordinary. Potatoes are dependable, a trustworthy staple, which today are eaten all over the world. But potatoes also tell stories about who we are, about family, and about our links to the cosmos. This talk explores some of these stories, from the poetry of Seamus Heaney to the potato’s role in War and Peace.
