- Supervisors: Dr Alison May, Dr Mel Evans
Profile
PhD candidate in Arabic–English Translation and Corpus Linguistics at the University of Leeds, specialising in legislative and peacebuilding discourse. I hold a Master's degree in Translation and Linguistics and a Bachelor's degree in Translation, both from the University of Mosul, graduating with distinction and ranking first in my cohort. With over ten years of academic and professional experience across higher education and international peacebuilding organisations, I bring expertise in corpus methods, legal translation, mixed-method research, and impact evaluation. My work focuses on advancing understanding of language use in post-conflict legal and policy contexts, with a commitment to promoting social cohesion and contributing to knowledge in forensic and peace linguistics.
Research interests
My research lies at the intersection of Arabic–English translation, corpus linguistics, and peace and legal discourse studies. I specialise in analysing how language, law, and peacebuilding interact in post-conflict societies, with a particular focus on Iraq.
I am currently investigating the linguistic and translational features of Iraqi legislative texts, examining how meaning, power relations, and peace-related concepts are constructed and transferred across languages using corpus-based methodologies. My research also explores the role of translation in shaping institutional communication, legal clarity, and social cohesion in post-conflict settings.
Key areas of interest include:
- Corpus-based translation studies
- Legal and institutional discourse
- Peacebuilding and conflict communication
- Legislative drafting and multilingual policy language
- Forensic linguistics and authorship analysis
- Sociolinguistics of conflict and post-conflict societies
My broader goal is to contribute to improved multilingual legal practices and support evidence-based approaches to peacebuilding communication.
