Portrait of Jess Clarke

Jess Clarke

I am a recent graduate of the BMus Music programme. During my time studying at Leeds, I have been presented with so many fantastic opportunities and pathways. As a percussionist with an interest in classical, jazz and world music I have been able to get involved in endless projects within Leeds University that have allowed me to explore all of the areas I am passionate about. Such opportunities include membership in various societies, including Leeds University Union Music Society (LUUMS) and Stage Musicals Society (SMS), the School of Music Percussion Ensemble and individual projects.

Within the music department there are multiple varied areas of study that cater to individual interests. During my time studying music at Leeds, I have had the privilege of teaching music in a secondary school, performing in lunchtime concerts, taking part in master classes and the opportunity to study abroad in Texas for the year!

I am always inspired by the vibrant and busy energy surrounding the union which is the central base for students and various projects happening within the University. It encourages me to be pro-active and get involved with the many things taking place. In my final year I was on the committee for Student Action for Refugees; a society that aims in raising awareness for the problems that asylum seekers face and working to make Leeds a more welcoming face for asylum seekers. The Union has provided me with a strong support base whilst allowing me to grow independently and start thinking about the future.
