Photography exhibition captures the cultures of Asia
The annual student-run Eye on Asia exhibition marks its 25th year with a lens-eye view celebration of Asian cultures.
Since its debut in 1992, the exhibition has been organised and run by students from East Asian Studies. Kim Glasgow, one of this year's organisers, described the event as "a great way to showcase different cultures across Asia and to give people a taste of the countries we study. For this, the exhibition’s 25th year, the theme is 'Capturing the Culture'. So when choosing entries for the exhibition, we chose images which showcased both the beauty of the country in which they were taken, and the essence of its culture – the people."
The photographs on display were chosen through a competition, which received over 250 submissions from staff, students, and members of the public. The resulting exhibition in Parkinson Court North contained 40 images representing life and culture in a range of Asia countries. It concluded with a public event featuring cultural performances and a prize-giving ceremony for the winning photographers.
The money raised from the competition entry fees and from selling prints of the exhibited photographs went to two initiatives run by Rose Charities International - an eye unit at a rehabilitation centre in Cambodia and an orphanage in Vietnam. The organisers' thanks also go to STA Travel and University's Business Confucius Institute for their support.
