York Public Lecture Presented by Dr Joanna Phillips

Dr Joanna Phillips, a University of Leeds alumnus, delivered a public lecture at Barley Hall, York about how bodily suffering was seen as a form of religious devotion during the crusades.

The lecture, titled 'You will suffer these and many other things in my name': Illness, Wounding and Suffering during the Crusades of the 12th and 13th Centuries', was part of Barley Hall's Church Explorer's programme for 2017. Phillips demonstrated how bodily suffering was seen as a necessary part of crusading. 

Phillips's research focuses on the crusader experience of health and disease in order to understand the impact of this on military engagements, and the interpretation of sickness and health in the contemporary narrative sources.
