Learning from burlesque to create safer spaces

A ‘Grassroots Safer Spaces Event’ at Leeds Playhouse has explored the good practices that burlesque communities use to build diverse and welcoming spaces

The event was part of the Fabulous Femininities project, led by Associate Professor Jacki Willson with Professor Alice O’Grady.

It included a showcase of the research project film, Bold Bodies, Safer Spaces, an overview of the research and a Q&A with project partners, Tawny Kay (producer) and T&A Productions co-owners Amy and Tanya and performers Mysti Vine and Vita Boheme. The topics of discussion focused on the importance of role models, equity and rights, and challenging bad behaviour (‘calling in’ rather than ‘calling out’).

You have really captured the spirit of our community – you are such powerful allies

The short documentary film shows a range of perspectives from group members in Leeds, Doncaster and Barnsley, presenting a rich understanding of the cultural power of community.

Burlesque spaces are values-driven, organised and managed to be safe and welcoming for women and femme-aligned communities. The event encouraged learning from their grassroots solutions to safety, inclusivity and equity.

A previous Fabulous Femininities documentary was nominated for 14 laurels at independent film festivals.

The project itself was celebrated for Mature Cultural Impact at the University’s Research and Impact Engagement Awards in 2024.
