Professor George Rodosthenous publishes in new special issue “Contemporary Directions in Director Training”
New special issue of Theatre, Dance and Performance Training features an article by Professor George Rodosthenous.
Professor Rodosthenous is Professor of Theatre Directing at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries. The latest edition of the journal looks at director training internationally and has a great array of contributors and types of contributions.
The article ‘Musicality and transformative mise-en-scène: Ten principles for teaching theatre directing as composition’ investigates how Professor Rodosthenous’ directorial influences are infiltrated and disseminated in his teaching of theatre directing.
Rodosthenous offers notes for the director as a composer and proposes a ten-part approach to teaching theatre directing as composition, employing musicalisation and transformative mise-en-scène as the two main axes of the students’ pedagogical journey.
The study explores a series of exercises associated with each one of the ten parts and presents a review of various directing strategies juxtaposed with appropriate contemporary case studies.
The ten principles introduce essential aspects of the work of prominent directors related to musicality and transformative mise-en-scène, such as tacit knowledge/forensic analysis (Katie Mitchell), musicalisation (Eugenio Barba, Rebecca Frecknall), musical knowledge (Yaël Farber), performative scenography and its relationship to musicalisation (Robert Lepage), sharpness and pace (Clint Dyer), playfulness (Emma Rice) and compositional freedom within a structure (Ivo van Hove).
