The British Academy elects new Leeds Fellow
The School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science is delighted to announce that Professor Helen Beebee has been elected to a Fellow of the British Academy in the 2023 cohort.
This fellowship is granted to scholars who have attained academic distinction in their branch of the humanities and social sciences, and only a very small number of scholars in any field are elected through an exacting and rigorous process.
Helen is a pioneering, world-leading metaphysician and philosopher of science, whose work is characterised by originality, subtlety and intellectual fearlessness.
Helen Beebee, Professor of Philosophy of Science, joins Helen Steward, Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Action in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, who was honoured with this fellowship in the cohort of 2021, also in the BFA section of Philosophy. Both are much deserved commendations and recognise the excellent work being done by both colleagues within the School.

Helen is a pioneering, world-leading metaphysician and philosopher of science, whose work is characterised by originality, subtlety and intellectual fearlessness. Her fellowship is an honour, not just for her, but for the whole School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science.
Rather wonderfully, Helen is the second colleague in two years to have been awarded an FBA. Last year Helen Steward, another metaphysician of the very highest calibre, was similarly honoured. Both Helens work on free will (among other things), and so the University of Leeds is now the place to work on the next of challenging philosophical questions concerning this concept.”
