Dr Dibyadyuti Roy nominated as an affiliate to Data and Society

Dibya Roy was recently welcomed as one of eleven new affiliates to Data & Society, a group of researchers, thinkers and advocates who collaborate with and lend their insight to the organization.

Data & Society (D&S) is an independent non-profit research organization, studying the social implications of data-centric technologies and automation. Through original research and inclusive engagement, the organisation works to ensure that empirical evidence and respect for human dignity guide how technology is developed and governed.

The affiliates program is a key avenue for Data & Society to work in partnership with members of its extended network, all of whom share a vision of a future in which data-centric technologies are grounded in equity and human dignity. Affiliates are formally nominated by current D&S staff every year.

Dr Dibyadyuti Roy is a lecturer in cultural studies, media studies and digital humanities at the University of Leeds, and programme director for the BA in Cultural and Media Studies.

With experience as an educator in multidisciplinary academic environments across three different continents, Dibya’s research and teaching examines cultural narratives of dominant technologies, ranging from nuclear weapons to artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on algorithmically driven platforms.

He is also a founding member of India’s first digital humanities collective, the Digital Humanities Alliance for Research and Teaching Innovations (DHARTI) and will be facilitating conversations around ‘Critical AI’ during the next year for the newly established Digital Creativity and Cultures Hub at the University of Leeds. Dibya said:

“I am humbled by this honour and look forward to building on my collaborative work with the Data & Society Research Institute.

“D&S has previously allowed me to advise on and shape exciting projects including the anthology on Parables of AI in/from the Majority World and the pedagogical resource titled A Primer on AI in/from the Majority World.”

Ania Calderon, Data & Society’s Managing Director of Strategy and Engagement, said:

“The affiliates program at Data & Society is an important manifestation of our value of mutuality. We value reciprocal relationships, and look forward to nurturing deeper relationships with these affiliates and continuing to learn from each other’s expertise.”
