Testimonials

“My stay as a visiting professor at the University of Leeds for 5 months was very fruitful and pleasant. Both the supervisor and the colleagues of the School LCS have been very friendly and welcoming, giving me the opportunity to carry out interesting activities to share our knowledge and facilitate the development of the specific research project that I wanted to develop during my stay.

“I have also been able to enjoy the great infrastructure that the university has for the university community and participate in various training activities developed in other departments, which have allowed me to meet very interesting professors and researchers, as well as deepen my knowledge on the subject of my specialty.

“During this time, I have greatly appreciated the freedom and support I have received to collaborate in various research and training projects with the members of the School LCS. I would like to thank them for their human qualities and support during all this time. The personal and professional relationships that we have built during this time will allow us to keep in touch and collaborate in the years to come.”

"During my time as a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Languages, Cultures, and Societies, I have benefited greatly from the supportive research environment at the University of Leeds. The outstanding collections at the Brotherton Library have been invaluable for advancing my current projects, which include an article, a research funding application, and a monograph based on my doctoral dissertation. I am especially grateful to Professor Gregorio Alonso and the Library staff for their warm welcome and generous assistance."

“My time as a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies has been an enriching experience. The environment was welcoming, and my colleagues were receptive and friendly. Although I am an experienced professor in Brazil, I have learned a lot by observing new research methods with interdisciplinary focuses, pedagogical experiences and academic events that differ from my reality. These experiences have contributed significantly to improving my attitude as an educator and expanding my knowledge in the area of studies on art and decoloniality. I relied on the University’s physical and digital bibliographic collection and tips from my academic sponsor, Professor Thea Pitman, to improve my written English. As a result, I was able to publish some articles in respected academic journals. I will return to my country with many good memories.”

Dr Alessandra Mello Simoes Paiva

“During my time as a Visiting Research Fellow in Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Leeds, which spanned from September 2014 to June 2015, I had the opportunity to engage in various academic activities, including guest lecturing on Turkish politics and research collaborating with my academic sponsor Dr. Kraetzschmar. One particularly rewarding aspect of my experience was the opportunity to co-author a chapter with Dr. Kraetzschmar on the Islamic left in Turkey. Overall, my time as a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Leeds was an enriching and transformative experience.”

“I joined the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies as a Visiting Research Fellow in August 2023 for a period of 12 months. My stay has been sponsored by the China Scholarship Council.

“I was drawn to the University of Leeds for its excellent global reputation in language studies, coupled with its vibrant academic community. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities and ample resources have provided an inspiring environment for collaborative research. The multicultural atmosphere on campus also provides a unique opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives. The guidance and support from the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies have been greatly enriching and facilitating my stay here.

“As a Visiting Research Fellow, I am engaged in research collaboration with Dr Clare Wright, an exemplary scholar with profound expertise in the field of applied linguistics. In addition to her scholarly achievements, Dr Wright's warmth and approachability contribute significantly to an inviting academic atmosphere which is typical of the University of Leeds as a whole.

“I am grateful for this invaluable opportunity and look forward to continued collaboration and expertise exchange during and after my time at the University of Leeds.”
