Profile
I arrived at Leeds in 1984, and was appointed to a personal chair in 1998. Previously I took my BA and PhD at Cambridge University. I have been a research fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars, and a Leverhulme research fellow. In 2013 I was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
Research interests
My work revolves around Shakespeare and his contemporaries, particularly 17th-century theatre and book history. My research focuses on the politics of the English stage, the court masque, Ben Jonson, and cinematic adaptation of Renaissance texts. For my editorial work on Shakespeare, Jonson, Massinger and Marston, see especially http://universitypublishingonline.org/cambridge/benjonson/blog/ and http://johnmarston.leeds.ac.uk/.
