Profile
I arrived at Leeds in 1984, and was appointed to a personal chair in 1998. Previously I took my BA and PhD at Cambridge University. I have been a research fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars, and a Leverhulme research fellow. In 2013 I was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
Research interests
My work revolves around Shakespeare and his contemporaries, particularly 17th-century theatre and book history. My research focuses on the politics of the English stage, the court masque, Ben Jonson, and cinematic adaptation of Renaissance texts. Student education
I teach a wide range of undergraduate and MA modules in the areas of Shakespeare and the Renaissance. I have a special focus on the textual editing strand of our Final Year Projects in English.
