Profile
I joined the Department of Philosophy as a Lecturer in 1987, after working in post-graduate teacher education for 12 years (6 of them at Leeds), and became Senior Lecturer in 1989.
In addition to serving as Head of Department, I was also Assistant Director of the national Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied, based at Leeds; and a member of the national Philosophy and Religious Studies Subject Centre, also based at Leeds.
I am now in Prague, as Visiting Professor, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, Charles University, and I hold visiting prof positions at Beijing Sports University; the Russian International Olympic University in Sochi; the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia, Greece, KU Leuven and the Foro Italico University of Rome.
At present, half my time is devoted to the MAiSI project (MA in Sports Ethics and Integrity), supported by Erasmus Mundus by over 6m euros over 7 years. Our partners are JGU Mainz, KU Leuven, UPF Barcelona, UoPeloponnese and Swansea. This year, 8 Olympic athletes are fully funded by the International Olympic Committee.

Research interests
My main interests are in applied ethics (especially sports ethics) and social/political philosophy, and I am co-editor of the Routledge series Ethics and Sport. I am also co-author of The Olympic Games Explained (2005), Sport and Spirituality (2007) and Olympic Values and Ethics in Contemporary Society (2012); and co-editor of Ethics and Sport (1998), Olympic Ethics and Philosophy (2012), Phenomenological Approaches to the Study of Sport (2012), Fields of Vision – the Arts in Sport (2014), Ethics and Governance in Sport (2016), and Body Ecology and Emersive Leisure (2018), and Experiential Learning and Outdoor Education (2019).
