Profile
I am pursuing a PhD in philosophy at the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science. The research is funded by the White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH).
Broadly speaking, my current research focuses on methodology in ethics. More specifically, I investigate whether and how certain kinds of empirical experiments can contribute to debates in normative ethics. Most empirical studies moral philosophers appeal to involve eliciting moral judgements about actions featured in hypothetical particular cases (e.g., trolley cases). By contrast, my research explores whether empirical studies that elicit beliefs, judgements and intuitions about moral principles can be distinctively relevant to normative ethics. Could such studies help us to assess whether specific moral principles are self-evident? Could empirical studies that ask subjects to employ “impartial thought-experiments” such as the veil of ignorance favour certain principles over others? These are some of the key questions I address in my research.
