Research workshop on Pentecostalism, Sexuality and Citizenship in Africa

On 10-11 November 2016, an exciting international research workshop took place at the University of Leeds, on the theme ‘Pentecostalism, Sexuality and Citizenship in Africa’. Hosted by the Centre for Religion and Public Life, the workshop was convened by Dr Adriaan van Klinken, Associate Professor of Religion and African Studies, as part of a University funded international research collaboration project. This project explores the complex and multifaceted relationship between Pentecostalism and sexual citizenship in contemporary African societies. It brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of researchers studying Pentecostalism, sexuality and politics in Africa, with the aim of developing long-term research collaboration and collaboratively applying for external research funding.

Participants in the workshop were a number of leading scholars, as well as early career researchers, working in several disciplines and at various institutions internationally:

  • Kwame Ahaligah, University of Leeds (UK)
  • Dr Marian Burchardt, Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Germany)
  • Dr Melissa Hackman, Emory University (USA)
  • Nathanael Homewood, Rice University (USA)
  • Benjamin Kirby, University of Leeds (UK)
  • Prof Ebenezer Obadare, University of Kansas (USA)
  • Dr Damaris Parsitau, Egerton University (Kenya)
  • Dr Joanna Sadgrove, University of Leeds (UK)
  • Dr Adriaan van Klinken, University of Leeds (UK)

Papers presented and discussed during the workshop are currently prepared for publication as a special journal issue. The discussions during the workshop have further opened up new areas for future research collaboration between the participants as well as other international scholars.
