Eve Walton

Profile

I am a Postgraduate Researcher and creative writer, with experience in writing and directing for stage and screen. My PhD is funded by the school of Performance and Cultural Industries, which commenced in October 2023.

I studied BA Theatre and Performance here at Leeds, graduating in 2019 and moving on to an MA in Writing for Performance and Publication. During my time as a student, I wrote and directed a number of performances both locally in Leeds and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. During lockdown, my original one-woman-show ‘Hopeful Romantic’ was debuted online by the New Works Playhouse. I also became an avid player of Dungeons and Dragons during this time, igniting my interest to pursue the topic for my PhD.

My research positions Dungeons & Dragon as a method of collaborative storytelling to investigate the effect of playfulness on creative writing, exploring the interactions of role-players and Dungeon Masters as an emerging form of creative practice. The project involves engaging in playful creative practice both as a creative writer and as a D&D player, focussing on concepts like shared authority of narrative, agency and autonomy at the gaming table, and the ontology of ‘writing’ as an embodied act.
